Abstract
The damper is an energy absorber that is used for only once. The shock energyproduced during scram is absorbed completely by the plastic deformation of thematerial. Because the working principle of the damper is completely different fromthat of the hydraulic bumper which is connected with it in series, the dampershould be regarded as the second safety defence when the bumper is disfunctional. The shock toughnesses of the samples, with various dimensions, especially with vari-ouss hapes are compared by means of simple estimation and then the materials ofthe damper with specific designed geometry are screened according to correspon-ding shock toughness.
