Study on Nuclear Forensic Analysis and Preliminary Attribution of Uranium Pellet

  • In order to deal with the nuclear security incidents and potential nuclear terrorist threats, and improve the nuclear forensic technology to prevent radioactive crimes or terrorist attacks, in this work, the uranium pellets, the most important product in the nuclear fuel cycle, were used as the analysis objects, and the nuclear forensic analysis technologies were used to trace the source and process conditions of the pellets. The fingerprint informations, such as physical appearance, micro structure, trace impurities, stable isotopic composition and uranium age etc. were analyzed. Based on the measurement and comprehensive analysis of the informations of the above nuclear forensic evidence, and compared with the domestic data of nuclear fuel pellets of the research, the sample pellet was traced to the source tentatively. The unique legacy is found in the uranium pellet due to the different geological conditions and the industrial process, and the characteristics are distinguished. Among all the characteristics, the age of nuclear material, trace impurities and composition of stable isotopes are particularly important.
