Current Progress and Prospect of Basic Research in Nuclear Physics at China Institute of Atomic Energy

  • Nuclear physics is one of the fundamental frontiers and major application fields of material science research, playing a significant role in exploration of the microscopic structure of matter, the status and security of a country. Our team achieved some new results on breakup mechanism of proton rich nuclei, new decay mode of unstable nuclei, deep underground direct measurement of astrophysical reaction, and laser driven nuclear reactions using the Beijing Radioactive Ion beam Facility (BRIF), the HI-13 tandem accelerator and the Jinping Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (JUNA) facility. This paper reviews some of the latest progress made by China Institute of Atomic Energy in basic research in nuclear physics during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, and the ideas of future development in big-science facilities in nuclear physics, medium and small-sized facilities, nuclear theory development, new experimental technologies, and interdisciplinary integration.
